this is starting to grow outside my writing range. It sounds like it could be a spy novel instead of a comic book story. I'm figuring out how to use as much of this as I can. Thanks, all!

Actually I could see it being a bit of a farce.

yeah, it could be. Most of my Zing stories are a little farcical so maybe it fits in...

totally different subject... Bruce King, the King of Darkness, was a Public Domain golden age super hero. He initially had 2 powers and later 3, driven by an 'ultra'short' radio wave (in the region of 10^-16 nm) device he called the Black Zero Generator. He could produce a 'pillar of darkness' - a column of absolute dark that appeared to stretch to infinity in the sky, and which moved with him when he carried around the Black Zero generator, he could cause the temperature in a localized region (undefined) to drop to 'absolute zero' (SAY! I just got the connection with the Black Zero generator that I never noticed before!!!) and he could fly. He was a skilled electrical engineer, who actually pioneered the use of transistors in the early 1940s. He is also on good terms with the FBI.
The FBI has just called him in to examine a train wreck - a train was derailed by sabotage with no survivors; the FBI suspects Axis spies, and Bruce has been called in to aid in the investigation. THE FBI knows of his powers, so that are asking both Bruce and the King of Darkness for aid.
I'd like for Bruce to discover a clue that no one else notices, but not sure if some aspect of his powers might have aided in his discovery. Any suggestions?
Freeze surfaces touched by oily fingers to outline fingerprints in frost?

If the rails were in the desert they would be affected by sudden cold. The heat affects the rails today, sopping trains transporting people and goods because of safety concerns so you could even use extreme heat

unfortunately in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the middle of summer, 1938...
and DARN, gotta call off this particular story before it even gets started. Supposed to happen in summer 1938 but Bruce King didn't get his powers as King of Darkness until 1941.
I can still use his special status with the FBI and still have them call him in on a case, but I can design a case that fits his powers rather than needing to shoehorn him into an existing case from another story.
Oops! Thanks!

One possibility- superconductive materials created by the King of Darknesses' attack. Low temperatures can cause some materials to become extremely conducive to conducting electricity, and if this is a case involving a speedster, then her or his abilities might have electromagnetic side-effects, so they might detect the phase shift in the affected material that way- say, they suddenly speed up when they approach or cross superconductive material because it causes their speed to accelerate. As superconductivity was first theorised over a century ago, that might be amenable when it comes to forensic detail. Especially if one of the protagonists has knowledge of chemistry and/or physics: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/superconductivity

A retired super hero in his secret identity (a rich inventor) is betting heavily at the horse racing track. He also spends a lot of time in illegal underworld casinos, so he knows, at least by sight, a lot of the regular gamblers in his city. Many of his idle rich friends, and a lot of less savory folks.
So, why would one of his acquaintances be aware that a super villain is going to pull a job in a neighboring city? And why would that person blab about it where this retired hero could hear about it?
Thinking maybe he had a lot of bad luck in the past and stopped gambling because he couldn't afford it, and just recently one of his buddies recruited him into a mob associated with the villain in the other city, and he's come back to boast to everyone who 'abandoned' him. And maybe the hero hears him boasting and buys him a couple of drinks to encourage his tongue.
Any thoughts on the above, or any other suggestions? Thanks as always!
