Chapter 46 The Impromptu Life Guard
Monday , July 26th1936, Berlin Germany
Libby Lawrence was in her street clothes when she dove in the pool to save the drowning German June Justis had thrown into the Olympic pool. It was a struggle for her to get the flailing man to either one of the sides or the the shallow end. He was much bigger and heavier than her and he could drown them both if she was not careful.
Libby was suddenly struck with inspiration. She let go of the German and let him sink. “Wait!” she said to the others gathered around the pool's edge. “He's too panicked. We'd both drown. I'll get him in a couple of seconds. Then we'll resuscitate him.”
Libby then swam down to where the unconscious German was. The man was obviously a police man. She wondered why he tried to stop June. She prayed that Kim was all right. As she brought the man to the side of the pool she remembered that June said she was of a FBI agent. Steve Carson would want to know about this immediately. He'd want to have proof that a German police officer tried to stop June. Libby took the man's wallet before she reached the side of the pool.
Once there the coaches took over in the resuscitation of the man. Other coaches were telling her what a swell job she did. The other athletes and spectators were applauding her rescue. Libby asked the head coach of the woman's team if June rescued Kim. The coach didn't know what she was talking about. Libby told her. Then the coaches started a head count. Realized that Kim was missing. They asked Libby again and again if she was certain that he was kidnapped.
They quickly spoke to the police guards who said they saw nothing. Still they try to gather all the athletes together on the stands as they tried to figure out what to do next. Libby over heard that the FBI liaison officer was over at the track field.
Betty Adams had been in a state of shock as she saw June Justis taken away after Kim had been. She was the only witness to that crime. She didn't know what to do. She turned to talk to Libby, who she thought was right beside her when she heard the commotion and saw Libby rescuing that poor man.
Libby was soaked. She went back to the women's locker room though she had no idea what she was going to wear. Betty saw her and followed her in and shortly burst into tears as she told Libby what she had seen. “The coaches are going to take at least another half an hour to try and call Steve Carson. Then the officials will have to find him” said Libby
“But what can we do?” cried Betty. Betty, who was dressed in a casual pants outfit with matching flat shoes, as opposed to Libby's soaked skirt, blouse and high heels.
Libby smiled at another idea she suddenly had. “It's only three miles to the track and I can run there in under a half an hour. We're approximately the same size Betty, we need to switch clothes.'
Betty agreed and the redressed Libby told Betty not to say anything about what she saw happen to June, except to Steve Carson, Sally Norris, or Bart Regan. Why those two chaperones Betty asked. “They're with the secret service, remember.” Betty nodded.
The heard the coaches looking for them Betty said Libby was changing. The coach told Betty to wait until Libby was done because they did not want anyone left alone because it might be dangerous. Betty started to sob with fright again. Libby put her arm comfortingly around her friend who now wearing Libby's soaked clothes “I'm going out the back exit. Wait two minutes join the others.”

Chapter 47 The Cavalryman
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany
Gus Grey had finished his practice runs, talked with the track coach before taking a shower. Gus felt like a fish out of water at the Olympics. It was not because he was black, several of his teammates on the track team were also; but they, like all the other athletes on the track team were either graduate from or were in college. Gus was a corporal in the United States Army.
Will Everett came over to Gus's locker saying “Jesse Owens and a bunch of the guys are going to take in the sights. Want to join us?”
Gus was spit shining his shoes as he looked up replying, “I'd like to Will, but I've already agreed to meet with Terry over at the stables once he gets done.”
Will's face showed a hint of anger “What's he want to talk to you about? He's already got all those Black grooms to lord over.”
Gus shook his head, “Same thing he's doing with those grooms. From them he learned how to be a groom, from me he's learning how to be a cavalryman.”
Will gave Gus sneer. “Cavalryman, what you know about being a cavalry man?”
“That's who I am. Corporal Augustus Grey, United States Army, Current assignment 10th US Cavalry Regiment (Colored)” said Gus with more than a little pride.
Will gave Gus a look of disgust “10th Cavalry Regiment (Colored),” he sneered. “Gus don't you know how the government walks all over us back home.”
“Of coarse I do Will, but the army is my home; as it was my father's and his father before him and my great-great grandpa fought in the Revolutionary war for General Washington” boasted Gus.
Will looked at his friend incredulously. “There were no Blacks in fighting in the Revolutionary War. We were slaves, only a step or two down from where we are now.”
“You sure are ignorant for an educated man. Find Glover's Regiment, also known as the Marblehead Regiment and the 14th Continental Regiment when you get back to college. It was founded by a whaling captain named John Glover and made up of whalers. Whalers didn't give a &*%# about what color your skin was. They cared about how competent you were. My family were freemen by the time of the Revolution.” said a now angry Gus Grey “Like all of us, we got screwed afterward. Still my Grandpa fought for the Union during the Civil War ,and stayed in the army fighting the Indians. He fought with Teddy Roosevelt on San Juan Hill. My dad fought in the Great War. We Grey's have fought in every conflict our country has fought.”
Will was taken aback by the smaller man's vehemence as he said “That still doesn't explain why you're at the white man's beck and call.”
Gus tied his shoelaces as he said “You didn't ask Will. You just assumed I'm doing the yessa massa bit when actually I'm trading knowledge with Terry.”
“What does he have to teach you?” asked Will
“Terry is going to teach me all about engines . I have plenty of leave coming to me after this. The age of the horse is over. Cavalry is obsolete. If I want to continue a career in the army I'd better have the skill set need for the next war” said Gus in a matter of fact tone.
“What war?” asked Will.
“Either the rematch with Germany that Hitler is obviously wants, or with the Japanese. I don't know which, maybe both; either way I need to be prepared; and I need to prepare” said Gus.
“There's not going to be another war Gus. And even if there is one, it'll belong to the white man” said Will.
Gus stood and looked at his friend smiled and said “The white man and the professional soldier Will.”
Gus left his friend and went out on to the playing field and looked around. Terry was finishing his routine. The chaperones Charlie Nicholas, Sally Norris and Bart Regan were in the stands. The FBI agent who was the American liaison officer was there as well, standing next to some one who could only be a cop. It was amazing to him how police detectives always stood out in crowds. Then he saw a small oriental fellow he's seen in the news reels. A detective named Mata, next to him stood a tall fellow who had the military bearing of an officer.
Will came up beside his and started to apologize ,but Gus cut him off. “What's Libby doing here? Why she running over to Terry ?”
He felt Will's strong hand on he shoulder. “Stay out of it brother.”
Gus look over at he friend and said' Can't, they're friends of mine. Same as you Will.” Gus ran over to Terry and Libby, noting that all the people he had spotted earlier were also headed there.
Will Everett swore as Gus ran towards Terry. “Damn it” he mumbled“They're friends of mine too” as he ran after Gus.

Chapter 48 The Alarm is Sounded
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany
Terry Sloane was very upset wit the news that Kim had been kidnapped. Libby Lawrence ran over to him and told him what had happened at the pool. Terry in turn reached into his pocket , he took out the whistle that Captain Strasser had given him and blew. Within moments the German police captain, his men, the American government agents, and Mr Mata were running to them. Terry was pleasantly surprised when he saw Will Everett and Gus Grey headed his way as well.
They were all asking him what was wrong as soon as they arrived. He said Libby has some information and asked them to wait until everyone was there so Libby could explain to everyone at once. It was one of the hardest things Terry had ever done in his young life because he wanted to know the details of what had happened to his friend. Granted Bart Regan and Charlie Nicholas had foisted Kim on to Terry, but Kim Wan was one of the most likable persons Terry had ever met. They had become close friends in a matter of days.
Libby told them everything that happened at the pool except for the fact that the man she rescued was a Gestapo Agent. Both Terry and Libby were surprised at how the FBI Agent Steve Carson and The International Police Officer Mister Mata both seemed to know she wasn't telling them everything. Terry suspected the other policemen there also suspected she wasn't telling the whole truth. She must have said something to have tipped them off. Terry made a mental note to himself to find out how police interviewed witnesses and suspects.
Steve Carson turned to Captain Strasser and said “Why don'thave half your squad head down to the pool. Maybe someone else saw something,”
“Ja” said the the captain. “I'll have the others go back to there positions where we can watch Mr Sloane. I shall return.”
Once Strasser left Steve asked Libby what she didn't want the German police to know.
Libby swallowed hard and handed Steve the Gestapo Agent's wallet with its badge inside.
Charlie Nicholas whistled long and soft. “That took guts. How you get it?”
“I took it from him int the pool. He was unconscious because he was the drowning man” reported Libby.
Steve pocketed to the wallet. “Alright, these spies are resorting to desperate measures but I don't think this was sanctioned by the German government.”
Commander Don Kerry said “I don't see why not. We ought to file an official complaint right now.”
“No Don,” said Bart Regan. “we do that and we'll run into a wall of red tape.”
“Right” said Steve. “And I'm worried that neither June or Kim have a that much time. Kidnapping is a tricky and dangerous thing.”
“Your bureau is your nations experts in these cases” said Mr Mata. “We defer to your expertise.”

Chapter 49 Divvying Up the Work
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany
“Right,” said Steve. He was quiet a moment, then took a deep breath, exhaling audibly. “This is what we're going to do. Sally take Libby back to the Olympic compound, pick up Beth Adams, and bring them both back to the hotel. They'll be safer there.”
“I don't think the American Olympic officials will let me Since I was here instead of the pool like I supposed to be. Unless I flash my badge and tell them its a federal police matter” said Sally. Sally was in the chaperone guise under the auspices of the FBI and wanted Steve's clearance, which he gave with a nod. With most agents Sally would have his agreement in writing, but she knew Bart's cousin's word was his bond. Sally took Libby by the arm and headed her off.
Libby protested, saying “We don't know what the others are going to do yet.”
“We don't need to know Libby” said Sally. “Right now we have to get to Betty. We have to get her to safety.” Libby lips formed an “O” and she picked up her pace towards the stadium's exit.
Even while they were leaving Steve turned to Mr Mata and Charlie Nicholas saying “Harry needs to know about this.”
There is a good probability that the kidnappers have already informed him and made their demands” said Mr Mata.
“I know” said Steve as he pinched the bridge of his nose. “There's a good chance that he will be gone by the time you get to the hotel. He's a father and will do whatever he can to save Kim...”
“But he is also one of the best detectives in the world so he'd leave us clues. Clues that weren't obvious. Ones that only another detective could follow” added Charlie Nicholas as he took a drink from his flask.
“You really shouldn't be drinking at a time like this Mr Nicholas” said Terry.
Charlie smiled at the younger man. “Kid, I haven't had a drop since I discovered someone tampered with my bottles in the hotel. This is water. Unfortunately. Come on Mr Mata.”
Steve next turned to Terry. “What's the rest of your planned routine today.”
“I was going to do another set of hurdles, then shower, get dressed and go down to the stables before returning to the Olympic village” said Terry.
Steve nodded. “Okay I want to to continue doing that. Strasser's men will keep an eye out on you but they'll have to back off if the Gestapo is involved. The Gestapo have authority over Strasser's people. That's why Commander Kerry is going to be with you as you go through the rest of your day. Strasser's men will tell you if they spot any Gestapo agents headed your way.”
He then turn to Don Kerry “It is imperative that you get Terry to either the hotel or the embassy if the Gestapo is involved. We have to know for certain the;y are but we also have to keep Terry safe.
“Won't that put Terry at unnecessary risk sir?” asked Gus Grey. Gus noted that his saying sir to Steve irked Will. But Gus only said the deferential sir because Steve was in charge.
Steve smiled back at Gus. “I haven't been called sir like that since I was in the marines, corporal. But to answer your question yes it will. That's why Commander Kerry is going to stay with Terry as he goes through his routine.
Gus turned to the Commander and said “request permission to accompany you on your mission sir.”
Don smiled as he replied “Permission granted Corporal...”
“Grey sir, Augustus, “Gus” Grey Sir.” said Gus.
“Call me Don while were on this assignment Gus” said Don as he put out his hand.
Will Everett stepped forward saying “I'm no soldier, but I'd like to help.”
Don looked at Terry and then Gus, both of whom nodded yes. Don put out his hand saying “Welcome aboard Mister...”
“Everett, Will Everett” said Will.
Seeing everything was in hand Steve motioned to Bart and the two left the others. “Bart I need someone with your particular skill set. I've gotten to know Strasser fairly well and he's a straight shooter”
“So” said Bart.
“This wallet the Lawrence girl gave me is legit. But I still don't think the Nazis are in on this” said Steve.
“Neither do I” replied Bart.
“I'm hoping I can convince Strasser to accompany me. I know the head of the Gestapo here in Berlin. He's capable of being an agent for another government. Most of these Nazis are crooks with badges. But the head guys are true believers. I need to talk to them about this.”
“Right, but where does my special skill set come in hand?” said Bart.
“I've got a guy on my four o'clock and another on my eight who have been shadowing everywhere since I got back to Berlin. I don't want them calling in when I go see the big wigs. I want to surprise the local Gestapo.”
“What about the agents on you six and the one at your three cousin” said Bart.
“%#$@, I didn't see them” said Steve.
“Your the most famous FBI agent outside of Hoover Steve. They're not going to take any chances with you. I'll handle them and then meet you at the hotel but Strasser can never know. He's a cop and would have to arrest me.” said Bart.
“Your not going to kill them?” asked Steve.
Bart smiled at his cousin. “Do I tell you how to do your job?”

Chapter 50 The Ransom Demand
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany
Harry Wan sat quietly in his hotel suite. He decided to stay there while the other investigators involved in the case watched over Terry Sloane because he was guarding something else. The small portable transmitter that could supposedly control properly equipped airplanes had been in his possession since he first started pursuing this case. The sickly Bob Merritt gave it to Harry. Harry believed Bob did not have any knowledge of the murders, but he still could not cross him off as a suspect. He had been fooled by brilliant criminals for a time before.
Harry had watched Bob closely and believed the famed aviator was dying. Harry surmised that Bob knew it too. Given all the help Bob provided in getting Harry to Germany before de la Rosa, the Chinese detective was fairly certain Bob was innocent.
Herb Cartwright, the electrical engineer was another story. He too came to Germany with Harry because Harry suspected he was the inside man involved in the theft of the robot's plane's equipment and murder of its crew. But Harry did not yet have any proof. He had not yet confided his thoughts with anyone.
Harry looked at his watch which was the old fashioned pocket watch attached to a golden fob given to him on his twenty-fifth anniversary with the Honolulu Police Department. Bob Merritt would be up by now. Harry was debating as whether or not to tell him about his belief of Cartwright's guilt. The dying aviator was consumed with finding his friends killers. It was quite possibly the only thing keeping him alive. The trouble was Cartwright was only a small fish and Harry wanted the bigger sharks.
Ost of all Harry wanted the big Kahuna that gave the orders. His organization was too international in scope to be the workings of any one government. Bapbap Mamoet was a Russian name while Gamberro Barbaro was Spanish. Both names meant the same thing. Harry deduced that Bart Regan and Sally Norris were working another assignment with someone in Germany with a similar name. Mr Mata and the others believed that these strange names were code for the ringleaders of various interconnected espionage and criminal groups.
Harry didn't say anything to anyone but he suspected that instead of the interlingual use of a strange name; one man was using multilingual variations on his own strange name. He was waiting for a delivery from the International Police Commission that would have either the photos or descriptions of all these men with the strange names. Harry believed it was the front desk notifying of the package's delivery when his phone rang.
“Harry Wan?” inquired an unknown male's voice.
“Yes” said Harry.
“Pop?” said an obviously scared Kim Wan.
“Kim?” asked a wondering Harry Wan.
Instead of hearing Kim's voice Harry once again heard the stranger's voice. “We know you have the transmitter Mr Wan. Come down to the lobby at once with it. We know you're alone. Don't leave any messages for the others. We will know. Get into the blue sedan on the opposite side of the hotels main entrance. If you don't we'll kill your son.” The phone went dead.
Harry went over to the writing desk and wrote a note in Chinese. He then tore the paper away and lit it with a match. He put the paper in the ashtray next to the pad of paper and watched it burn turn to ashes before going into the bathroom. He then went over to the transmitter the criminals wanted do badly. Harry opened the case and flipped a switch before closing the case that contained it. He locked it and took it down to the lobby. After making sure that he was conspicuous in the lobby, went directly to the blue sedan. The car sped off as soon as Harry entered the vehicle.

Chapter 51 The Olympic Committeewoman's Displeasure
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany
Sally and Libby took a taxi to the Olympic village outside of Berlin. Sally paid the driver while Libby headed directly to the small apartment she shared with Betty Adams two other female American Olympic swimmers. On her way Mrs. Stetson, a senior official on the American Olympic Committee called out her name.
Libby stopped dead in her tracks because she could not ignore the woman who now ordered Libby to come to her. The older woman demanded to know where Libby had been. She claimed that the entire team was worried sick about her. “Now tell me where Kim Wan is. You were seen leaving with him.”
Libby was perplexed, “Kim was kidnapped” she said. “Ask Betty Adams, she saw it too.”
“Miss Adams told us that ridiculous story Miss Lawrence; though she refused to tell us why she was dressed in your wet clothes. She and Mister Wan have been suspended from the team. You will be too if you don't tell me where you've been” said Mrs Stetson threateningly.
“She's been with me” said Sally Norris. “Now answer Miss Lawrence's question: Where's Betty Adams.”
Mrs Stetson stood straighter as her nose rose snobbishly “Ah, Miss Norris, you have been fired from your chaperoning duties. I must ask you to leave the village.”
Sally briefly considered slugging the priggish woman, but instead said “Listen, unless you want to go to jail for impeding a federal criminal investigation...”
“Nonsense,” interjected Mrs Stetson, “My father-in-law is a United States senator. Besides no crime has been committed. I would tread very carefully Miss Norris. You are no longer an Olympic chaperone. Do you still want to be a treasury agent?”
Sally slugged Mrs Stetson who fell to the ground in a heap. “Consider yourself a wanted felon when you get back to the states Mrs Stetson.” Sally and Libby then headed for the apartment complex. Betty Adams wasn't at the apartment. They were told that she was over at the Olympic Committee's office.
They immediately went there. The official outside the committee meeting whom Sally had come to know during the transatlantic voyage on the Bremen. said they couldn't go in. Sally politely asked if Betty Adams was at the meeting. The guard said yes she was with Clara Nicholson. He also told her a howling mad Mrs Stetson had entered the meeting a few minutes ago.
Sally thanked the man before opening the door and interrupting the meeting along with Libby Lawrence. The men and women who made up the committee express anger and contempt at Sally's entrance. Sally screamed “Quiet” over their words of anger. The room hushed.
“I don't have time for this. Kim Wan has been kidnapped. Miss Lawrence and Miss Adams are the only to who witnessed the crime. They need to come with me.”
The committee members looked at one another before one of them spoke. “If that's so where is the FBI Agent... Mr Carlson, or even his secretary?”
“His name is Agent Carson, Special Agent Steven Carson. He's following another lead. Turning to Clara Nicholas she added “Charlie Nicholas, the famed former detective has gone to tell Harry Wan, the famed Chinese Detective about his son's abduction.” Sally threw out Harry Wan's because she did not want to disclose to the committee her knowledge June's kidnapping.
“Harry Wan is here? In Germany?' asked an astonished committee woman.
“Yes, he has been on the trail of several suspects all the way from Hawaii. That is all I can say other that I need to take both Miss Adams and Miss Lawrence into protective custody” said Sally.
“I should say not” said an angry Mrs Stetson. “These are preposterous statements. Why should we believe harry Wan is here in Germany. It's just too convenient. You just assaulted me. I want you arrested, and these two thrown off the team.”
Clara Nicholas suddenly spoke up “Everything Miss Norris has said about Harry being here is correct. My husband and Sally have both been working with Detective Wan.”
Sally shrugged her shoulders as she said “And I didn't hit you Mrs Stetson, You fell. Didn't she Miss Lawrence?” Libby smiled as she nodded in agreement with Sally.
The Committee quickly agreed to place the two Olympian into Sally Norris's custody. Sally saw two of Captain Strasser's men, who were were waiting for them. Sally had them take them and Clara to the hotel. She told Clara that she believed Mrs Stetson might be part of the criminal network.

Chapter 52 Chopping off the Tail
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany
Bart watched as his cousin and Captain Strasser left the stadium, followed by the four man detachment that was tailing Steve Carson. Steve had told Bart where he was going and how he was going to get there. It was a good two mile walk. Bart watched the detachment for a short while; noting the intervals each one took as the lead tail with the other three following.
Bart smiled because he had watched America's relay team earlier this morning and was now watching a counter espionage variation. Bart hailed a taxi and was quickly ahead of his cousin and the relay team tail. He had the cab stop halfway between the stadium and Steve's destination. The driver was quite perplexed as to why an obviously healthy man needed a ride for this short distance. Bart knew that the man was going to remember this so he gave the man a tip that was probably worth six months of the man's salary, saying “you never gave me a ride” in his best menacing voice. The driver nodded nervously; even as as he greedily pocketed the money before driving off.
Bart looked at his watch before ducking into an alley. Knowing how closely he resembled his cousin, Bart took a steel mirror out of his jacket pocket along with a small makeup kit. After he made up his face he put away the mirror and makeup as his cousin and Captain Strasser pass by. He then watched the first of the tail detail pass. Bart knew the the trailing agents had eyes on the man in front of them. Three on one odds aren't fun he mused.
He saw the second tail walk by, waited a minute and then exited the alley. He made certain the third tail saw him and walked down the opposite way towards the third tail, who was obviously taken aback as Bart passed him; going the other way. The tail took a few moments before he started following Bart; just as America's premiere spy wanted Bart continued walking until he saw the forth and final tail saw him; reacting in the exact same manner as the third. Bart then started running down a side street. The two raced after him. Bart went into an alcove and wrapped a handkerchief around his right hand's knuckles as he waited. The two counter espionage agents hurried down the street, each on one side of the street. Not many people walked on this street so there were not going to be many witnesses, if any.
Bart watched as the German on the opposite side of the street passed by. He waited until the agent on his of the street passed his alcove. He then sprung out like a lamprey, grabbing the German by the neck. Bart choked the man, taking away his breath. Bart saw the other agent continue on as he did not notice what was going on to his partner. Frowning he loosened his grip enough to allow the the ensnared German to cry out. His partner turned when he heard him.
Bart again tightened his grip as his prey's friend ran towards them. The man in his grasp collapsed unconsciously as the partner reached them. Bart pushed now unconscious man into the other. This caused the would be rescuer to lose his balance. Though he did not fall; Bart used his momentary loss of footing to repeatedly punch the man until he too fell unconscious.
Bart look about and saw a gathering crowd looking at him. Bart rushed into the crowd, which caused them to dissolve as he passed. Bart ran back towards the arena before hailing another cab. He had the cab take him to Steve's destination.
Bart checked his watch and estimated he had four minutes before Steve and Captain Strasser would be arriving. Bart unwrapped his handkerchief from his right hand and wiped off his make up. He watched Steve and Strasser enter the building. He kept his eye on the first tail. After ten minutes the second man approached the first. They talked for a few minutes. One turned to leave when several Waffen SS soldiers came rushing out of the building. They took the two men into custody.
Bart smiled as he headed for the hotel. He knew Steve's destination would confuse the tailing detail. The odds were a lot higher that they would have called their superiors for instructions if there had been more than two of them. More importantly the bosses would have an idea what Steve was planning. Bart surmised that one of the pair was about to find a pay phone when the soldiers came out.

Chapter 53 Betrayal
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany
Lieutenant Commander Don Kerry USN felt highly uncomfortable with the assignment Steve Carson gave him -escort a seventeen-year-old Olympian genius while he did his daily practice routines. Don felt it would be better to have the boy go hotel, but Carson wanted to know how brazen the criminals were. That and if agents of the Gestapo were working in tandem with them.
Bart Regan reassured Don to a degree when he said the youth in question had black belts in several martial arts. Still Don missed partner, Red Murphy, who was still Kiel recovering from a fight with one of these killers. Captain Strasser assigned two of his men to accompany them; but the older detective, Schultz told him they couldn't do anything to help if the Gestapo were involved. Schultz did say he and his partner, a younger man with thick glasses named Dietrich would stay outside once they arrived at the stables where the horses for the American dressage team, as well as the horse Terry Sloan rode in the Modern Pentathlon were being kept. Dietrich added that they would be sure to warn Don if the Gestapo showed up. He told Don to listen for them to start yelling. Yelling which would have nothing to do with their assignment.
Don still did not feel reassured even when two colored Olympian friends of Sloan agreed to accompany them. Gus Grey was a short, career soldier, who volunteered to help his friend. He said he would follow Don's orders. While it was good to have another military man around Don wondered bout his ability; primarily because in Dons service, the navy only allowed people of color to serve in a ship's mess or as a admiral's orderly and a waiter was not what was needed here. The other man was a tall well built man who looked more like a weight lifter that the sprinter he was.
Once they arrived at the stables Terry took his horse out for practice drills. Don watched the young man and saw a fine horseman. He was admiring the youth's skill when Gus came up to him. “He a natural horseman isn't he?” he said to Gus.
The cavalry corporal shook his head from side to side. “No he has to work at it. He seems to be good at everything he does. I know its looks like it's natural and effortless, but that boy has to work gain his ability. It don't come easily to him sir. That's one reason why he wanted to learn how to be a groom.”
Don reflected on what Gus said before saying “did he tell you that?”
“No sir. I can tell by the way he rides. There's little things he does that say he's not quite one with his mount yet. But he'll be there by the times the games start” said Gus.
Don started to say something before he remembered that Gus Grey said he was in the cavalry. He would be sure to see things that Don missed. He now started to feel better about being out here. Gus Grey was a sharp customer.
Gus left Don as Terry finished his drills and returned his ride to her stall. Don surveyed the area, noting the two detectives and headed back. Will Everett was walking very quickly over to him. Don did not care for the sprinter as he seem to have a very large chip on his shoulder.
Will spoke to him in a soft voice “I think you should know that one of the grooms made a call while you were out here.”
“Why?” asked Don
“Because he spoke in a foreign language - I think it was German.”
Don cocked an eyebrow as he asked “Again why is this important Mr Everett?”
Will train of though skipped a for a moment when the naval officer called him Mister Everett. A part of him thought Don was somehow insulting him before he realized that the man was being polite. Will never gave Don permission to call him by his first name. Will smiled at that and said “Please call me Will. Back on board the Bremen the grooms all swore to a man that they didn't speak any foreign languages, including German”
Don's eyes widened at the revelation. “Wil,l tell Dietrich and Schultz were leaving. I'll collect Terry and Gus”
Don raced to the stalls. There he saw Terry brushing horse while Gus played card swith some grooms. Don put his hand on Gus's shoulder and bent down saying “We have to leave now.”
Gus looked up at Don, who was already headed to the stall where Terry was. He put down his cards and said “Sorry boy, I'd love to stay and take your money but the man says we gotta go.” With that he rose at went over to the stalls.
Terry was telling Don that he hadn't finished with his horse yet when Gus walked in. Don was unable to persuade the young man who insisted on brushing his horse . He was about to try and physically force him to leave when they heard a commotion going on in the common area. Then they heard Detective Schultz yelling to someone outside “I know Nothing. Dietrich knows nothing.”
Terry audibly gulped as he too knew the signal Schultz was sending them – Gestapo! He put down his brush and the three quickly headed for the exit. That was when Terry Sloan truly learned the lesson Bart Regan tried to teach him about how truly dishonest and dangerous spies were.
Jack, Benny, and another groom named Dennis had pistols drawn. Dennis had his gun aimed at the other grooms, who had their hands up. Jack and Benny had theirs pointed I the direction of Terry, Gus and Don.
“You aren't going anywhere Terry” said Benny. “Mister Savage finally gave orders to bring you to him.” Benny spoke with a cultured English accent. Benny laughed when he saw Terry's questioning face. “My real name in Prince B'Nei of the Zulu Tribe. I graduated from Oxford in 1905. And yes I'll kill your companions or these stupid blacks here if you try to escape.”

Chapter 54 Baptism Under Fire
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany
Will Everett, who had sprinted out of the horse barn to tell the German police detectives that they were leaving stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the black sedan stop beside the fat older detective. The men in the car were asking the detective questions. Will did not hear the questions, but he heard the detective saying something in German in a loud, almost yelling voice. Instinctively Will knew he was trying to warn the men inside. Will turned and ran back to the horse barn.
There he heard another noise – a commotion of chairs being overturned and gasps. Next he heard a high class Englishman saying “You aren't going anywhere Terry.” Will recognized the voice as one o the grooms, but the accent and diction was all wrong. Jesus he thought to himself – a bunch of black spies – right under the nose of the white man. No, not the white man, their friend, my friend, Terry Sloane.
Will slowed his step and quietly moved to the door to the horse barn. He opened the door slightly. He saw the grooms Jack and Benny pointing pistols at Terry, Gus, and the naval officer Don Kerry. A third groom, Dennis, had his gun pointed at his fellow grooms.
“The Gestapo will be here soon Terry and they will take you to see our boss” said Benny.
“You're taking him to the Gestapo headquarters?” asked Don Kerry as he stepped in front of Terry.
“I normally don't answer my prisoners questions, but since you will all be dead in a matter of minutes...why not. My boss does not work for any government” said Benny.
The other grooms had heard their death sentence and start moaning, and wailing. Begging for their lives. “Jack,” said Benny, “help Dennis in disposing of the grooms.”
“Wait! You can't!” cried Terry.
Don Kerry said “You know football Gus?”
“Oh yes sir” replied Gus as he made a flying tackle towards Benny's knees as Don Kerry kicked out at his pistol.
It was then when Dennis and Jack turned towards their companion that Will acted; he burst through the open door and hit Jack in the back of the head. Next the other grooms as one joined in the attack, quickly subduing the two. Will looked over to where Terry was. Benny was on the ground, staring up with unseeing eyes. Three prongs of a pitchfork bloodily protruding from his chest. Don Kerry was on the ground beside him with blood pumping from his leg with every heartbeat. Gus tore off his tie and was making a tourniquet.
Terry was still stunned, muttering to himself “all because of me, all this because of me.”
Gus looked up and sized up the situation. Terry was in a state of shock. His pappy told him about this. Some men couldn't handle the violence, others were able to handle it from the beginning, and still others who froze at first could become the best soldiers his father had ever seen.
Gus need to get Terry away but he also knew he had to stay with the badly wounded lieutenant commander would probably die if he didn't stay with him. He then saw Will and yelled to his friend “Will, get Terry out of here!” Now!”
Will nodded and took Terry by the shoulders and nudged him towards the door. “Terry, the Gestapo are here. We've gotta run. Its the only way we can save the others.” Will would always remember the amazement he had when he looked in Terry's eyes at the moment. It went from one of crying confusion to steely eyed determination.
Terry bolted out the door, less than a second later Will follow him. They ran to an open area when they saw the Gestapo headed towards the barn. Terry yelled at them in German, making sure he had their attention before running away. Will followed.
“Why the hell did you do that?” Will asked.
“To save the others” replied Terry.

Chapter 55 The Chase
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany
Will Everett and Terry Sloan ran away from the car as fast as they could, dodging down side streets and alleyways. They never were blocked off because Terry had memorized the street maps of Berlin during their voyage. Will was getting tired, he was a sprinter – not a distance runner. They were totally different disciplines of track; Terry it seemed to Will had mastered both. They stopped by the corner of a side street for a moment to catch their breaths. Will gasped at the fact that Terry was barely breathing hard.
Terry said to Will “please don't take this the wrong way Will. I'm going to go on alone.”
Will, who was hunched over as he tried to get his wind back nodded. “Yeah... you're the ...you're the one they're after. I'm...only slowing you down. I'll tell you one thing though... Terry, you're pretty God Damn terrific.”
Terry smiled back at Will. “Yeah, well Will, you're an amazing fellow yourself.” Terry then ran off.
Will stood up straight, then leaned against the building and rested. A few minutes later he started walking back towards the horse barn. A black sedan came down the street towards him. Will instinctively knew he was in trouble. He turned and saw a corner where he could run but before he could start running another black car appeared, cutting off his exit. Will swallowed hard. I guess this how my cousin felt when the lynch mob got a hold of him back in Mississippi. Well they won't take me without a fight he thought as he clenched his fists.
The cars stopped five feet in front and behind him. Two men exited each of the vehicles while the drivers stayed at the wheel with the engines running. They were big burly men, obviously used to bullying others. Will was determined to fight the them until they pulled out their pistols. One of the men said in heavily accented English “You will come with us, ja? You can come wounded or....healthy. Choose!” Will took a deep breathe and put up his hands.
Terry was continuing his run to the hotel. He was going in a circuitous route as he wanted the Gestapo to think he was headed to the American Embassy. He immediately realized that they would have embassy completely blocked off, but he hoped that they would figure out that he knew what they would do.
This was a totally knew experience for Terry Sloan, a boy genius and gifted athlete who could do anything he put his mind and body to. He shook his head as he thought spies – theres nothing they do that's on the up and up. Nothing at all fair about how they behave, even the American ones. I wonder how I can learn the art of espionage. Not to spy he thought, but to catch them in the act. I don't ever want to be a victim of their ilk again.
Terry was within half mile of the hotel where he knew Bart Regan was staying when he spotted Will Everett standing by the back door of a black government issue sedan. Terry saw that Will had seen him as well because his friend looked away from Terry too quickly.
On cue Terry heard a man speaking in broken English. “Give up Herr Sloan or we will kill your friend.”
Terry stepped back into the shadows of an alleyway. “You let him go first, unharmed. Then I will come out and surrender. If you know anything about me you know I'm a man of my word” he said in German.
Terry saw Will start to walk away from the car. Terry took a deep breath before saying in German “Thank you, I'll come out after I see he has gotten away completely.”
Will was very angry as he sprinted away towards the hotel. He knew he had to run away because Bart Regan had to know what had happened.
Terry Sloan came out of the shadows and gave himself up to the Gestapo agents

Chapter 56 The Party Hack
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany
Mr Mata and Charlie Nicholas rode in the back of an unmarked police sedan driven by Detective Klink. Klink's; partner Detective Burkhalter sat in the front seat. Burkhalter had on his perpetual displeased sneer on while Klink twitched nervously. Burkhalter sat up when they approached the hotel because he saw numerous police cars in front as well as the ambulance from the city morgue.
Klink parked the car. The four exited the vehicle with the German detectives in the forefront, flashing their credentials to the uniformed officers who attempted to stop them. “Who is in charge?” Asked Klink as he passed the uniformed officers. Burkhalter's sneer grew when he heard the name Inspector Lieutenant Hochstetter.
Nicholas and Mata looked at one another before Charlie (who did not speak German) said in a soft voice “I take it the this Hochstetter is going to be a problem?”
Klink said in English “he's newly promoted and thinks very highly of himself.”
Burkhalter, also speaking softly in English said “He's a party hack who was only a uniformed officer who spent his entire thirteen year career as a traffic officer. Hie uncle is a high official in the government. He was promoted over hundreds of others.” Including Burkhalter both Mr Mata and Charlie Nicolas thought.
They proceeded to the front desk. The German detectives again showed their credentials and asked where the crime had occurred. The man said a man had been found murdered in a hotel suite. Burkhalter then asked to whom the room was registered. They all looked at on another and quickly headed to the elevator when they were told the room belonged to Bob Merritt.
As they waited for the Elevator Mr Mata said “I think you three should go to Mr Merritt's room. I will go to Harry Wan's. I am concerned that he too might have been harmed.”
Charlie said “He's probably helping the police investigation.”
“No,” said Burkhalter. “If anything Hockstetter is keeping Detective Wan confined to his room. He would not want any foreign – Non Aryans involved in his case.”
“In that case, it is all the better that I go to Harry Wan's room” said Mr Mata.
The elevator arrived and they told the operator which floors they wanted off on. The man replied that he could not let them off on the floor of Bob Merritt's room until the German detectives showed the man their credentials.
They again showed them to the uniform officer standing by the elevator entrance. Charlie Nicholas kept quiet as he accompanied the two detectives. He kept to the back examining the crime scene. As he listened to Burkhalter and Hochstetter speak he wished he knew German. Klink then came besides Charlie. In his hand he had a small pad which he showed to Charlie. Klink had written per Hochstetter: the victim is Fritz Schmidt. He is a waiter. He died here after a struggle. Bob Merritt is the murderer.
Charlie raised an eyebrow at that piece of information. “Does the detective lieutenant know how sick Bob Merritt is?”
The Inspector Lieutenant turned to look at Charlie and said something to him. Klink answered for Charlie.
Hochstetter obviously wanted Charlie out of the room. He was ordering Burkhalter and Klink out as well. Klink took a step for the door before Burkhalter spoke in a loud voice. Klink translated for Charlie. “I claim prior jurisdiction Detective Lieutenant Hochstetter. Captain Strasser is in charge of an ongoing investigation of international espionage and murder. This crime is part of that. Herr Merrett is a very sick man and incapable of garroting this man. Who did not die in this room.”
Hochstetter interrupted “How can you say he was not murdered here?”
“Look at the carpet” said Klink, emboldened by his partner.
Hochstetter looked at the carpet before saying “The carpet tells us nothing.”
“The carpet tells you everything Dummkopf” bellowed Burkhalter. “Look at the corpse. There are no carpet stains around the body”s groin.”
“Of coarse there is no carpet stains - the man was strangled Burkhalter.” exclaimed the inspector lieutenant.
“Hochstetter, when a man dies his bowels and bladder empty. There should be a large stain on the carpet. Also if you look over at the furniture you will see that none of it has been moved. The strewn papers, pillows, and overturned lamps show that the murderer was trying to make this look like the scene of a struggle, but he did not strain himself” summed up Burkhalter.
Hochstetter was looking crestfallen. “Then where was this man murdered?”
“I do not know” said Burkhalter. “Have your men look for stains and notify me if you find anything. I'll contact Captain Strasser.”
“And where will you be?” asked Hochstetter.
Burkhalter gave both Harry Wan and Herbert Cartwright's room numbers and left. “Klink, go see Mr Mata and tell him what has happened. Herr Nicholas and I are going to talk to Herr Cartwright.”

Chapter 56 Left Clues
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany
Mr. Mata was still investigating Harry Wan's empty suite when he heard a knock at the door. “Enter...the door is... open” he said in stiff, stilted German, a language, unlike English of French; he had not yet completely mastered. He understood when other spoke to him and he could read books written in German easily enough, but he still had trouble formulating sentences.
Detective Klink entered and quickly relayed what they had found in Bob Merrett's suite. The smaller Japanese detective nodded at the information, but he did not stop what he was doing “Tell me Detective Klink; what do notice about this suite and Mr Merritt's?”
The fidgety German detective looked about before saying “It's exactly the same as all the other rooms.”
“Correct! This room had a do not disturb note on the door. I saw it when I entered. Yet a maid has cleaned the room. Removing clues Harry Wan tried to leave.”
Klink looked around again before saying “You think your group is being spied on by hotel employees.”
Again Mr Mata nodded. “Oh yes, detective; but they made a mistake when they cleaned the room. Harry Wan left a note one the bathroom mirror which has been thoroughly cleaned – wiping away all traces of it.”
“How do you know that if all trace of its existence has been erased?” asked Klink.
“Because Harry Wan left a much subtler clue. See the writing pad by the ashtray? The paper is out of place. It should be over by the desk, not on the nightstand next to the ashtray.”
Klink's eyes brightened as he said “Before Harry Wan left he wrote on that pad of paper, purposefully using force great enough to leave impressions in the paper underneath.”
“Yes” said Mr Mata., “I would not have checked the pad had not put it next to the ashtray.”
Klink was looking over Mr Mata's shoulder he saw how Mr Mata had spread the ashes of his cigarette on to the writing tablet to reveal Harry Wan's message “Oh no!” exclaimed Klink. “He wrote the note in Chinese.”
Mr Mata looked up at his fellow detective and smiled “No, not Chinese, Japanese. Harry Wan wrote the note in Japanese. I did not know he could speak or write Japanese; but it is understandable as Hawaii has a large Japanese immigrant population.”
“What does the note say? Asked Klink
Mr Mata read and translated the note. “Kim kidnapped. Merritt's case is ransom. Suspect two or three spy cells here in hotel watching us. Left not on bathroom mirror to verify. Leaving at one PM. I will be noticed.
When he was finished Klink said “We need to go to the others at Cartwright's suite.”
“Yes” agreed Mr Mata. They left and went to the elevator which was operated by a friendly small, thin man with balding black hair. Klink told his what floor to take them to while Mr Mata asked the operator what time he came on duty.
“Oh I have been here since nine o'clock sir. I have to say, your German is excellent sir” the man said with a smile.
“Yes” acknowledge Mr Mata. “Please tell me what time Mr Wan, the other... Oriental gentleman staying here, went down to the lobby.
The operator momentarily looked suspicious before his ever so winning smile appeared back on his face before responding “I couldn't say sir because I have not seen him all day.”
Mr Mata nodded and waited until the elevator stopped, a uniformed German police officer was standing by the elevator entrance. Mr Mata smiled at the elevator operator and said “You are lying. Harry Wan made a point to have be seen by the hotel's employees. You are a spy.”
The small thin man produced a knife in his right had as if by magic as he thrust it towards Mr Mata's abdomen. Mr Mata side-stepped the attack as he countered with a judo throw that had the small man on his back. Klink and the uniformed officer drew their sidearms and had them aimed at the man, who promptly gave up.

Chapter 57 Hotel Cells
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany Inspector Lieutenant Hochstetter came out of Herb Cartwright at the sound of the commotion in the hallway wondering why his men couldn't keep it quiet. He was not surprised to see Detective Klink with Mr Mata, as he was expecting the famed Japanese detective, but the fact that Klink and one of his officers holding a gun on the prone elevator operator. “Klink!” Hochstetter bellowed, knowing how nervous Klink's disposition made the young balding easily bullied, “What is going on.”
Hochstetter scowled when Mr Mata politely intervened and explained that the elevator operator was a spy and had attempted to stab the Oriental detective.
Hochstetter turned to back into Cartwright's suite saying “I'll call the Gestapo. They handle spies.”
Mr Mata noticed the relief that fell across the prone elevator operator before saying “Not yet please. I believe several other employees of this hotel are spies.”
Detective Burkhalter and Charlie Nicholas came out into the hallway just then. Charlie had a bemused smile as he appraised the situation. “One would be the maid.”
Hochstetter said “Which Maid? This hotel has dozens.”
“The one who was assigned to the rooms of Misters Wan, Nicholas, Regan, Cartwright, Merritt, Mr and Mrs Nicholas, as well as Miss Norris” said Mr Mata. I have noticed her on all our floors, but the other maids are assigned specific floors” said Mr Mata.
“Right,” said Charlie. Better include the waiter who served us all our meals over at Harry's suite.” Charlie then snapped his fingers. Say Bob Merritt didn't ever have breakfast with us because he was too tired. He would have ate later. I bet the waiter who served us ... his name was Hans. Remember the dining cart. You could easily carry a body around on that thing.”
The Elevator operator's operator's eyes widened as he listened to the on going deductions being made, which told all the detectives present, except for the oblivious Hochstetter, that the man could speak English and more importantly, that they were correct.
Detective Burkhalter translated Charlie's word before adding “Herr Merritt was ill, but he would have still been able to put up a struggle. Herr Cartwright was not ill. Yet his room has almost the same staged scene of a struggle as Herr Merritt's. I would believe we can assume their food was drugged if Herr Cartwright did not join you this morning.”
“But he did” said Charlie.
“Which makes Mr Cartwright the inside man in the murders in Honolulu. Harry Wan suspect him, but could not yet rule out Mr Merritt. Now we know” said Mr. Mata
Detective Klink could see the agitation on the captured spy's face. “I would say that it is possible that a chef as well as the waiter are part of the spy cell.” when he saw the spy's face he was certain their was a cook in the cell.
“That makes four with this fellow, but we know these spy cells work in groups of three, two men and one woman” said Burkhalter.
“How do you know that?” said Hochstetter, who was listening their rapid deductions in complete amazement
“It was a commonality when we discovered this international spy ring” said Mister Mata in German. “There were only two bellhops that took all of us to our rooms when we checked in. The man at the desk explained that he had no others available. Given that the front desk usually assigns the maid's duties He too is most likely a member of a spy cell.
“That makes seven” said Charlie after hearing Burkhalter's translation. “Still an odd number. The gender ratio off as well.”
“So we are looking for two women” said Hochstetter with a lustful look in his eyes after hearing the translation of Charlies words. “We will have to search and interrogate the entire female staff.”
“No need for that” said Mr. Mata. I believe we can narrow down our search. Remember there was only one maid assigned to our rooms we can ignore the other maids...”
“Same with the wait staff” said Klink.
They were all silent for a moment before the Charlie, Mr Mata, Burkhalter and Klink said almost simultaneously: “the telephone operators.”
“You mean they have been listening in on your telephone conversations” said Hochstetter.
“Ja” said Burkhalter, “get your men together Detective Lieutenant Hochstetter. We have several arrests to make.”
Hochstetter nodded before saying “then we will call the Gestapo after we make the arrests.
“Nien” said Klink, “I'm afraid this spy organization has penetrated the Gestapo.”
Hochstetter's eyes bugged out of his head. “then what are we going to do?”
“We wait in Harry Wan's suite. Captain Strasser is going to call us there” said Burkhalter.
“But this is beyond Captain Strasser's jurisdiction” protested Hochstetter.
“No,” said Klink, “but that is what we ordered to do. Und Captain Strasser even know speaking with the highest members of the Reich.”

Chapter 58 Using Evil to Fight Evil
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany
Steve Carson's stomach was upset. He intensely disliked what he was doing, but he had to save Kim Wan and his fellow agent, June Justis (he did not yet know about Terry Sloan, Bob Merritt, or Harry Wan). Though Steve enjoyed Germany, her people, and especially Captain Strasser and his men, he had a strong aversion to the Nazi Government that rule over Germany with an iron fist.
Yet he had discovered a group of spies which had penetrated the Gestapo – the German secret police. Steve knew that this was the best way to overthrow any dictatorship. He wondered if it might not be best for German government to fall. He no doubt would have not told them if these same ruthless spies had not kidnapped Americans whom he was duty bound to rescue. Unfortunately, he could not accomplish his mission without the cooperation of the German government.
Steve and Captain Strasser had been able to convince Reichsfurher Heinrich Himmler that Berlin's Gestapo had been compromised. Himmler expressed concern because dozens of Gestapo agents had come to Berlin in preparation of t next week's Olympic Games. The local head of the Gestapo, Albert von Kleiss had personally requested all the influx of agents by name, personally vouching for each one.
A coup waiting to happen thought Steve. He saw that both Himmler and Strasser thought so too. An incensed Himmler was going to have his SS Storm Troopers arrest all of the Gestapo agents in Berlin immediately. Steve talked him out of it because it would put the Americans in danger; probably get them killed. It was when he stressed the international negative publicity their deaths would cause. He leveraged his argument by saying that if the reichsfurher followed his lead, Steve would make keeping all involved quiet about this case a matter of American national security. This way Steve said “No one need know about the kidnapping of our athlete or my secretary.”
Himmler had agreed. Steve, Captain Strasser, and Himmler left the Reichstag in Himmler's limousine. Several detachments of storm troopers followed In a small convoy of trucks. They arrived at Berlin's Gestapo Headquarters. Reichsfurher Himmler led the them through the doors. He was recognized by the agents, who stood at attention. They remain in that pose as the storm trooper entered. And took the agents into custody. This process continued throughout the building as they walked to the office of Albert von Kleiss.
Albert von Kleiss was in his office. He had just spoken to his agents who informed him that Terry Sloan had been delivered to Baron Wandale Wilden Manor. The head of Berlin's Gestapo was worried that the kidnapping of an Olympic athlete could put off this week's planned overthrow of Hitler because the Fuhrer was using the Olympics as a showcase of how great Germany was under the Nazis. Von Kleiss knew Hitler would turn Germany upside down to save his face in front of the world; but it was what Wilden wanted and von Kleiss knew he had to unquestioningly obey hismaster.
He was deep in his musings when the door open. The American Steve Carson and a regular German police captain entered his office unannounced. Von Kleiss angrily stood as he yelled “What are you doing here?!' next he called for his secretary, “Heinrich! Heinrich get in here now1”
“I'm afraid he is indisposed. So are your men, so please don't call them” said Steve as Captain Strasser drew his pistol.
“I know you and your agents are involved in the kidnapping of Kim Wan and my Secretary June Justis...”
“Your fellow FBI Agent you mean Herr Carson” said von Kleiss.
Steve shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly as he said “As far as I know she's just a secretary; but that's besides the point. Where are they?”
“You are in no position to ask anything” said von Kleiss. “Captain Strasser's men may have control of the building right now; but soon other agents will become aware of this and they will arrest you. Your diplomatic passport will save you, but Captain Strasser and his men will be executed within the week.”
Steve shrugged his shoulders again saying “Actually, Captain Strasser's men aren't here. Some are with at our hotel. Others are trailing Terry Sloan. If you've been dumb enough to have kidnapped him; Strasser's men have followed the abductors to their hide out.”
Von Kleiss started to sweat now. “If Strasser's men are not here. Who would have dared to helped you take over my building.” the head of Berlin's Gestapo wet himself when Reichsfuher Himmler walked into the office.
“You maybe permitted a cyanide capsule if you tell us everything you know” said the psychopathic German reichsfuher. Left unsaid was Himmler's assurance of the horribly long drawn out painful death if he did not.

Chapter 59 The Gang's all here
Monday , July 26th 1936, Berlin Germany
When an out of breath Will Everett arrived at the hotel he was surprised to see a uniformed German police officer at the front desk. The officer had another officer escort him to Harry Wan's suite. There he found Charlie Nicholas and his wife Clara, Mr Mata, Bart Regan, Sally Norris and Clara Nicholas , along with Libby Lawrence and Betty Adams, as well as several German police detectives. One of whom was on the phone. Will rushed in a spoke directly to Bart Regan, explaining how Don Kerry had been shot and Terry Sloan had been kidnapped.
“Yes, we know Will. Commander Kerry is being operated on even as we speak and Detectives Schultz and Dietrich are bring Gus Grey to the hotel” said Bart. “we want to get all of you innocent civilians here where we can keep you safe.”
“But what about Terry? Asked Will.
“We know where he is. The police are using phones instead of radios so our conversations aren't monitored. Sally, Mr Mata and I will be headed there once Gus gets here. Charlie will stay here as he too is a civilian. The German government doesn't want to risk any non-profession people” explained Bart.
“Non-professional?!!” exclaimed Will. “What about Terry?”
“We will do everything we can to save Terry and the others” assured Bart.
“Oh yeah” the girl Libby told us about” said Will.” But you said others – who else have they kidnapped?”
Kim's father, Harry Wan and , a man name Bob Merritt” said Bart. “on other thing Will, if we get everyone safely out of this; you're going to have to sign a paper legally binding you to never reveal any of this.”
“You're kidding” said Will.
“No I'm not. I am afraid it is the only way we can get the Germans to put our people safety first. Otherwise they told us that they will go in with guns a blazing.” said Bart. There's nothing we can do. It is their country.”
“When do I sign this paper?” Asked Will.
Bart reached into his jacket saying now as he handed Will the papers. Give it to Inspector Lieutenant Hochstetter over there when you're done.”
Bart, Sally, Mr. Mata, and three German detectives left as soon after Gus arrived and Bart had handed the young cavalryman a copy of the same paper he had given Will.
Charlie Nicholas went over to the bar as soon as they left. He reached into his pocket and poured the contents of his flask into the sink. He then opened a bottle whiskey and poured himself a tall drink.
“Why on earth did you empty your flask dear?” asked his wife.
Charlie smiled as he explained how he had found the bottles in their room had been tampered with and how he had been drinking tap water all day. “But now my involvement in this case is done and I plan and getting good and drunk. Anyone else care to join me?”
