Part 1
by Dan Swanson
"Say, Bat, how bout me and you do a night out on the town?" Bat Lash really enjoyed the many new directions in his life since he'd started dating Helena Wayne, but there were thrills and excitement to be found in the less-than-reputable clubs he intended to visit that couldn't be matched in a grand ballroom surrounded by the social 'elite' of Gotham City, dressed in tuxes and gowns. Besides, 'Lena would have his hide for running a con on one of her friends!
Bat didn't really see what was wrong with a well-done con every once and a while. His targets were always those who in his own mind, deserved it - other con artists who preyed on honest folks, grifters, crooks, etc. In his own way, he was something of a super hero, just like Helena - tracking down bad guys and punishing them for their anti-social acts, using their own menthods against them. Yes, he was a hero too! Still, he didn't want publicity or adulation, he was embarassed by being the center of attention. So he kept his activites secret, even from 'Lena, who would certainly hve applauded his exploits, if she only knew...
"Wow! That sounds great! Can we go to the circus and see the clowns, and maybe try some of the games? I'll bet I could ring the bell with the sledgehammer! Boyohboyohboy! The Circus!" Bat-Mite was bobbing around the room in joy, bouncing between the floor and the ceiling. Bat Lash reached out and grabbed the little fellow.
"No, I had something less... smelly in mind!"
"Boyohboy! There's a stage magician down at the Remy tonight! I love trying to figure out their tricks! It's so funny watching them pretend to know magic!"
Bat-Mite was literally bubbling with enthusiasm. As he spoke, shiny soap bubbles were forming around his body and floating away. As they burst, each one gave off the smell of a flower or an expensive perfume. Within seconds, the room smelled so sweet, Bat Lash couldn't stand it. He reached out and shook his small friend gently.
"Wale, pardner, you've in the right neighborhood!" The Remy was rather run down, and in one of the more sleazy neighborhoods in Gotham City. "I was thinking maybe The Wheel?" The Wheel was famous for it's dance floor - circular, lighted from underneath, the band played on a raised platform in the center as the dance floor spun slowly around it. It was less well known, at least among law abiding citizens, for its basement.
"Oooohh, the Wheel!" Bat Mite said disapprovingly. "You know they have an illegal casino downstairs? 'Lean's been planning to shut them down for weeks, but something more important always comes up!"
Bat Lash had known that, in fact. It had kept him busy, pointing out other things that rated the attention of the Huntress while he finished setting up his own plans. But he was used to laying the groundwork for a good con; it was just part of being professional and thorough. He had done hours of investigation; he knew the layout of the illegal casino thoroughly, had a good idea how the games were rigged, and had acquired dossiers on the most prominent of the casino's clients. Tonight would be the big payoff; after he'd finished his own heroics, Helena could bust this place any time with his blessings. But it wouldn't do to let Bat-Mite know this.
"Really?" he feigned surprise. "Well, what say you and I give her a hand, then?" he smiled and winked. Bat-Mite perked right up and smiled back at him. The imp couldn't resist a chance to prove his worth to Helena!
"Boyohboyohboy! Let's go!"
"Hold on, Bat! You can't walk into an illegal casino dressed like Batman - there'd be a riot!"
"So what? We're going in there to bust them, who cares if they riot?"
"You know how 'Lena reacts to big showy displays of magic?" Mite nodded his head, glumly. "We have to be subtle. So you stick with me and follow my lead - Subtle is my middle name!"
"I thought your middle name was Romance?" Mite squeeked.
"That too, my boy! That too!"
