Tortoisequoia - he is an elderly scientist who is bitter at the world for rejecting his ideas and theories. His last and greatest discovery is a life extending potion, that he developed using the unique factors that grant Sequoia trees and tortoises such long lives, and when he drinks the potion something goes wrong. He dies. But the potion mutates his body, and some indeterminate period later, he breaks out of his coffin and claws his way out of his grave, now an undead with a horrible form. His flesh has been mutated into scaly leather, he has claws on his hands and feet, and his head has become the head of a tortoise, complete with a powerful beak... and he has a virtually invulnerable shell on his back. Under the leathery armor, his body has been transformed into plant matter, and his bones are now composed of wood - but not normal wood, wood that has been somehow enhanced to be virtually indestructible.
His intellect has been virtually destroyed; he speaks pidgin English, is barely capable of the most rudimentary reasoning, and is driven mostly by hatred of humanity, though his human capacity for the gentler emotion is not gone, just deeply buried.
He is very strong, his skin will turn knife blades and small arms fire, his shell is invulnerable to artillery shells, at least. He can at least partially withdraw his head and appendices into the shell. He may have other plant and reptile related powers (since this is a Golden Age villain, he will probably exhibit these powers randomly whenever a particular power is needed in a story but then they may never be seen again... ) .He is strongly resistant to extremes of temperature. He can eat just about anything; the reptile part of his metabolism helps him digest food, and if he eats dirt and is exposed to sunlight, his plant metabolism helps digest that. In the long run, he does require some sort of sustenance, air and water, but can go for extended periods without any of these.
Many people think his name sounds like an Aztec deity so there might be something there as well.
He is destined to become the arch-foe of Black Zero, the King of Darkness.
What do you think? Suggestions for his origin, appearance, prior identity, spelling of his name, possible relationship to the Aztecs, deeper motivation (does he just want to destroy everything, or just be left alone? Or something in between? Might he be lonely?), etc.
Thanks!
