You could also finesse the alien invasion angle somewhat to get matters down to a manageable scale. Instead of a fully fledged alien invasion with battlecruisers, a flagship and strategic operations centre, several battalions of troopships, a vanguard, landing craft etc, why not try... -a vanguard by itself, some distance in front of the main fleet, designed to soften up resistance/test the enemy -a reconnaissance vessel/vessels, designed to scope out the lay of the land -a preliminary strategic incursion, designed to neutralise any particularly grave potential threats (which sounds like your original plot). It would have the advantage of being manageable in scope and scale, and enable your heroes to put up a good fight, perhaps sufficiently to scare the main enemy fleet away. -what phase of development is the civilisation/s that back the alien invasion in? There's no harm in weighting the dice and 'cheating.' Let's say the empire that's doing this has seen better days and is losing stronger stellar provinces with effective leadership (rather like the Galactic Empire in Asimov's Foundation novels). It therefore decides to subdue what it mistakenly views as a 'primitive' pre-starlight culture. It's also in relative technological decline, and positions in that society are determined by hereditary succession, not merit, skill and competence. Added to which, their own society doesn't have metasapients of their own, so they've never encountered a strategic situation like this before.)

good thoughts. I have to a) get several characters invitations to join the hero group and b) get the hero group access to a couple of alien flying saucers after the adventure is over and c) introduce 3 new characters who show up in later stories.
So I can scale down the original story and still achieve those goals.

So, I have a superheroine standing in the middle of a circle of kids on the streets of New York in 1961 - they have been throwing stuff at a small dog, who is terrified. What does she say or do to teach them a lesson?
Sorry for the plot questions, but for some reason, my storytelling brain is on vacation...

Say she has illusion casting powers. Suddenly, the puppy is gone, replaced by an illusion of a very large, vicious looking hound with malicious intent toward the children. It starts chasing them, but they're the only ones that the creature is visible to. At a certain point, the illusion fades away but the kids have learned their lesson.

Hmm... in the case of Kali, since she doesn't have illusion powers, maybe she could have zoomed over the zoo and picked up a jaguar, and swapped it out for the puppy for a couple of seconds... no real danger, since she has super speed and would easily be able to prevent injuries, but if the poor puppy was yipping and then suddenly the yips were replaced by the angry roars of a hunting cat for a couple of seconds, that might leave an impression...

So... I need a way for several different heroes to meet. Their partners or teammates have been abducted by aliens who have a hideout near Roswell, NM. and they are heading to Roswell independently. They haven't met as heroes yet. The heroes are * Palette (who is well known in San Francisco but virtually unknown anywhere else; * Donal Regan (who nobody knows is a hero yet except Donal himself), who is coming from Phoenix * Adventurine and Tom Atomic, very well-know in Chicago with limited national recognition. So, Palette and Donal will both recognize Adventurine and Tom Atomic as fellow heroes, but they won't recognize Palette. They might recognize Donal - in their civilian ids, they met him at a party a couple years ago when he still lived in Chicago, but they won't know he is a hero. And he knows them in their civilian IDs but has no idea they are heroes too. I have a partial solution, I think. Palette and Donal are both flying to Roswell in private airplanes, and they might arrive at around the same time. But even if they run into each other in one of the airport buildings, they won't know each other, and neither will know that the other is a hero. Tom Atomic is going to fly himself and carry Adventurine from Chicago to Roswell. So if they were all to land at the same airport at around the same time, Donal might approach the Chicago heroes (since he is from Chicago and knows them by reputation) and ask if they are in Roswell to search for the aliens, and they might vaguely recognize him from the party last year and talk with him long enough to establish a common interest. And Palette might overhear and insert herself into the conversation. But why is Tom Atomic landing at a private airport outside Roswell? The airport is totally unconnected to the aliens.

Tom Atomic is landing at the airfield because he needs access to the specific resources available there and not at public facilities. That may involve newly developed surveillance technology or biometric data on the aliens which has tracked down their whereabouts. At a pinch, you could argue that it's reverse-engineered from the alleged UFO that's supposed to have crashed there in 1947, if you want to incorporate that particular angle. That's the reason it's a private airfield- it's also a science hub and you need security clearance to land there and access its facilities. Tom may well have a past that involves military aspects and prior liaison with the armed forces, so he has that clearance. Adventurine might have had a past in espionage and acquired the security clearance that way, for operational reasons in the spying discipline.

Well, it is my universe! Maybe there is a UFO Research Center in Roswell, and because their teammates and partners have been traced to this general area, they all drop in to that Center to see if they have any clues. I think I'll go with something like that, thank you!

[...] it's a private airfield- it's also a science hub and you need security clearance to land there and access its facilities. [...] OK, from the above, this is my first draft of the meeting: With all 4 heroes headed to the same airport, each with a similar mission, it seemed inevitable that they would should meet. Alex’s chartered plane landed first, and she thanks Phil and then quickly headed for the Space Center. Damien’s book had mentioned that the aliens had built an underground base not too far from Roswell, but there was a lot of desert out there – without a more definite location, she could spend days searching, even using her powers to assist. Donal landed next. He could still sense the chaun, and his sense had continued to grow stronger as he had flown east. A few miles ago, he felt as if he had passed over his missing self, so he needed to land and return. He hadn’t expected to be this close to an airport, but it was way better than landing in the desert sand. The D-IX had him feeling pretty good, and he was getting better adapted to his condition by now. He’d actually discovered an advantage – he was several inches shorter than normal, and the cockpit of his small plane was much less crowded. And one of the shirts he’d accidentally shrunk in the drier now fit him perfectly! Still, he had to concentrate intensely to overcome the euphoric aspects of the D-IX in order to safely land the plane. He thought he ought to rent a car, but the D-IX gave him a feeling of power and invincibility – he felt as if it would be no effort at all to just run to where he needed to go. As the two heroes independently made their way to the main building at the airport, they couldn’t help but notice some commotion around them. By now, many people on the base were aware that two mystery heroes would be landing shortly, and finally, someone with binoculars exclaimed and pointed – and then everyone was staring at the sky as a flying man, accompanied by a small flying vehicle, swooped to a landing not far from the airport tower.
