For his TV series, in Detective Comics #286, Roy Raymond journeyed to Ecuador to re-enact a legendary scene in which a monster repelled a Spanish force. A 'witch man' created the monster to repel the invading Spaniards, and then turned it to stone and it was walled up into a cave with special powder that held it in the 'stoned' condition. 300 years later, Roy is determined to open the cave, even over the objections of the current 'witch man'. He says "There's nothing to fear! We're only dealing with a legend!"
Of course he's wrong, the cave is open, which allows the powder to disperse, which brings the monster back to life... and of course it wreaks havoc and of course, Roy gets to be the hero of the story when he finds a hidden supply of the secret powder which had been stolen after he opened the cave.
One would think that after years of adventures in which normally fantastic things happened to him regularly, Roy would be a little more likely to give credence to potentially dangerous legends. He's seen unbelievable situations come to life before... and to basically ignore what the natives are telling him, and doing something they try to forbid is very arrogant.

I think the problem is that we only see the more exciting investigations Roy did. If he disproves a dozen legends a year and we see the one time the legend has validity- then sure he looks stupid for ignoring the locals. On the other hand if we saw him face the same local opposition and 95% of the time he is right, then his skepticism seems more reasonable.
It's like seeing Terence Thirteen trying to debunk Doctor Fate, the Spectre and the Phantom Stranger. We know he is wrong. But if he had spent his life dealing with stuff fron the original Scooby Doo cartoons and con men posing as psychics ... suddenly expecting to pull a rubber mask off Trigon isn't as crazy sounding.

I can see both your points. I always wanted to write a Roy Raymond story- possible one about him as a young man before his series started- but I never did it. I like him a lot in spite of his flaws.

Pulling a mask off Trigon has to be one of the best lines I've read in a long time! "Zoinks! It's not a m.m...mask!"
