Blue Fire Adventures! Volume 1, Issue 2
A New Player: Misty Blue
Failing Powers
Jack Knapp, a University of Toledo student majoring in Biochemistry (and secretly the new heroic mystery man "Blue Fire"), was juggling multiple classes over the summer 1943 term. His parents had high expectations for him to become a doctor, but today he was more focused on picking up his girlfriend Hazel and catching a doubleheader baseball game at Swayne Field, home of the Triple A Toledo Mud Hens. As he drove through downtown, he heard police sirens blaring and hoped he could help resolve the problem quickly in his secret superhero identity of Blue Fire (the Cobalt Comet) so he wouldn't be late to pick up Hazel.
"It's Blue Fire time!" Jack thought with excitement. "I hope Blue Fire can handle this in a hurry! I was going to be a bit early to pick up Hazel; that ought to be enough time!" He quickly parked his car at the curb and slipped into an alley, pulling out one of his special 'teabags' from a pouch on his belt. He squeezed the capsules inside until they popped, releasing a bright blue mist. Inhaling deeply, Jack felt his whole body shiver as he entered his Blue Fire powers. Despite feeling some increasingly familiar pain during the transformation, he pushed it aside and flew off towards the source of the sirens. Blue Fire zoomed into the air, a man-like being totally engulfed in flickering blue flames, leaving a short trail of flame behind him as he flew. As he flew off towards the sirens, he was appalled to discover that no matter how much he strained, he couldn't reach anywhere near his best flying speed.
"There's something wrong with my Blue Fire powers," he concluded reluctantly, a thought that had been lurking in his mind for a few weeks, but which he had never allowed himself to actually consider before. "I'll need to investigate... tomorrow, after I deal with the source of these sirens, and catch the ball game with Hazel!"
Fortunately, he didn't have far to go - he was approaching the tallest building in Toledo, the PNC Bank Building on Madison Avenue - and it was coated from the ground to the 2nd floor windows in a block of ICE!
"That has to be the Frost!" Jack thought exultingly. "I've been waiting for another chance at him since last winter!"
Shortly after the chem lab accident that had given Jack his Blue Fire powers, he'd twice fought with an Axis spy named Alatt Hóvihart (code name: The Frost), who had powerful cold powers provided by pills he took (for the first battle, see: The Origin of Blue Fire). Unfortunately after both inconclusive battles between fire and ice, the spy had managed to escape, and since then, nobody had heard from the Frost... until today!
By the time he finally reached the bank, Blue Fire realized he was too late... the sirens were fading towards the east, and no matter how he pushed himself, he couldn't catch up. When he finally reached Maumee Harbor, far away across Lake Erie he could barely discern a boat speeding away. He knew that at his present speed, he could never catch up. Defeated and totally discouraged, he flew as quickly as he could (not very fast at all, actually...) back to the alley near his car, and dispelled the Blue Fire.
He was left panting and achy and he felt weak all over, almost as if he'd just lost a tough fist fight. He sat behind the wheel for a good 10 minutes recovering before he felt good enough to drive, and then hurried off to pick up Hazel for their date. He was a few minutes late...

He was left panting and achy and he felt weak all over, almost as if he'd just lost a tough fist fight. He sat behind the wheel for a good 10 minutes recovering before he felt good enough to drive, and then hurried off to pick up Hazel for their date. He was a few minutes late...
Hazel was somewhat alarmed when she first saw him - not only was Jack usually predictably punctual, but she noticed that his skin appeared to have a very faint bluish tinge. Within minutes it was no longer noticeable, so she didn't say anything - maybe it had been a freak reflection from the navy blue Mud Hens jersey he was wearing.
Jack couldn't shake off the disappointment and frustration as he drove to the park, absolutely certain that there was something wrong with his Blue Fire powers. But for now, he tried to push those thoughts aside and enjoy the doubleheader with Hazel by his side. As Jack and Hazel settled into their seats at the baseball game, the vibrant energy of the cheerful home crowd around them was a stark contrast to the heavy weight on Jack's shoulders. Despite all Hazel's attempts to lift his spirits, his mind kept drifting back to his failed attempt to stop The Frost and his failing powers. About the third inning, Hazel decided to address his distraction directly.
"You seem distant, Jack. Is everything alright?" she asked softly, her eyes full of concern.
Jack hesitated for a moment, unsure of how much to reveal to Hazel about his secret life. He'd never told her that he was the Blue Fire. But her genuine care and unwavering support made him feel safe enough to share a small piece of his burden. He thought for a second, coming up with a story about almost getting embroiled in a bank robbery, then began...
"I had a run-in with The Frost today. As Blue Fire, I was unable to stop him!" he admitted, without thinking - and then stopped in stunned panic - he hadn't meant to tell Hazel the Blue Fire part! It had just slipped out. He hoped it wouldn't shock her too much, or scare her away!
To his surprise, instead of shock or panic, Hazel's expression turned stern. "It's about time you admitted you're Blue Fire... I figured it out weeks ago, and was just waiting... you were on thin ice, buster!" Then she turned thoughtful. "Oops, sorry... I've read about the Frost in the papers, and he's nothing to joke about. He sounds dangerous."
Jack was taken aback by Hazel's calm reaction and her revelation that she had known his secret identity all along. He couldn't help but feel a rush of relief at finally being able to share this heavy burden with someone he cared about.
"Yeah, The Frost is no joke. I tried to stop him today, but he slipped through my fingers," Jack confessed, grateful for Hazel's understanding gaze. "I think my Blue Fire powers are failing!"
Hazel squeezed his hand reassuringly. "You can't save the world every day, Jack. You're doing the best you can, and that's what matters."
Her words added to his determination to find out what was wrong with his powers and do everything he could to fix them. And maybe Hazel, who was in the UT nursing program but also had ambitions of going to med school, could help. "There's something wrong with my powers - I'm afraid I'm becoming allergic to the blue mist that activates them. I'm going to investigate after the ball game - will you help?"
"Why wait?" she asked with a smile. "It's a boring game anyway, and I've been hoping we could skip the second game for something more exciting. Let's go back to your lab and get started right now!"
"Yeah, what could be more exciting than lab work on such a bright, sunny day?" he joked feebly. "Let's go!"
Sad News
"At first I thought you had another girlfriend. Lucky for you I figured it out before long," she noted, a warning tone in her voice. "But you never treated me any different, and all of your frat brothers insisted I was still your only date, and then it dawned on me that whenever you disappeared, Blue Fire would show up someplace. And..." a dramatic pause, "you eventually gave yourself away when you talked about Blue Fire's exploits - you knew details nobody else knew, or things we didn't find out until we read the newspaper stories the next day. You really need to be a lot more careful about that!" Another warning, this one much less subtle. "Then I was starting to wonder if I really wanted to continue as your steady date... if you feel like you can't trust me with your secrets, what does that say about our future together?"
"I'm sorry. I didn't know how to tell you or what to say. Nobody I know has ever had a secret like this before," he replied apologetically, then plaintively, "What if I told you, and it scared you away, and I never saw you again?"
"Well, you finally told me - and I'm still here," she said pointedly. "So why don't you tell me the whole story, and fill in the holes between my guesses?"
Jack related his origin and how he learned to use his powers - and his encounters with the Frost and the strange villain who had called himself 'Old Sam'. (The first two Blue Fire adventures are recounted in his origin story, linked above.)
"So, you control your powers just by thinking about them?" she asked curiously when he was done
"It seems like they are almost instinctive," he agreed. "But," he continued, "I did get better with practice!"
"So tell me about your problems!" This took longer, and they were still talking when the reached the small house Jack rented. As soon as they entered, Hazel asked to look through one of his pre-med textbooks.
And she was quickly back, showing him a section of the book. "Your symptoms, as Jack, sound similar to cyanosis, a condition where the ability of the blood to carry oxygen is diminished, and which can cause, among other things, a bluish tinge to the skin, tiredness, muscle fatigue and aches and pains." The discussed this and came up with a series of tests they ran on a sample of Jack's blood...
"So, exposure to the Blue Mist somehow lessens my blood's ability to carry oxygen," Jack summarized sadly when they were done. "It's a temporary condition which in my case wears off very slowly."
"It looks like whatever the mist does to your blood, it was still affecting you hours after you came out of the Blue Fire, and probably lingers for days," Hazel agreed. "The effects must be cumulative. No wonder you've been so listless recently."
It clearly hurt for him to go on. "I'm probably going to have to stop being Blue Fire! Crime in Toledo will run wild!"
Hazel didn't think right now would be a good time to remind Jack that crime in Toledo had hardly been excessive before Blue Fire appeared... and privately, she thought that maybe if he only became Blue Fire once a week or so, he would be able to escape the debilitating effects of the Blue Mist. "Let's check again in a week, Jack," she tried to comfort him. "Maybe you'll have recovered fully by then!"
But neither student had expected what similar tests on Hazel's blood had showed - the Blue Mist seemed to have no effect on Hazel's blood's ability to carry oxygen.
So, she continued thoughtfully. "I wonder if that means I can safely use the Blue Fire? I could fill in for you until we figure out..."
"No WAY!" Jack snapped back instantly. "It's TOO DANGEROUS for a GIRL!"
Furious and disappointed but determined to use the Blue Fire abilities herself, Hazel stormed off, slamming the door violently on the way out.
"That was pretty stupid," Jack berated himself. "Have you EVER known her to listen when someone told her a girl can't do anything a man can? I wonder how long it will be before she forgives me?" That thought alone kept him up half the night. If he'd realized that several of his special tea bags were missing, he probably wouldn't have slept at all!
