After Midnight
Well past midnight, a terrified man raced frantically through the foggy streets of the small city of Valle Vista, California. His heart thundered painfully in his chest as he gasped desperately to fill his aching lungs. With white-knuckled desperation, he clutched a rolled up newspaper as if were a weapon to fend off the ghostly glowing apparition floating sedately through the fog behind him like the mythical malevolent Will of the Wisp of Scottish legend.
His terror intensified with every fleeting glance at the ominous haunt relentlessly pursuing him. He never noticed when he crashed through the thin rope that had been strung across the sidewalk before he plunged into the 6 foot deep excavation for a broken sewer pipe. The paper flew from his hand as he flailed desperately for anything to grab on to. His head struck a block of rubble with a sickening crack and he rolled to a stop on his back.
The ghostly figure stood at the edge of the excavation and watched in cold satisfaction as the front page of the newspaper fluttered down and came to a rest on the man's chest, revealing the headline: "Serial Rapist Strikes Again".
“No longer,” the ghost spoke grimly. The glow faded as Gale O'Leary tucked a small sprig of willow securely into her hair above her ear and turned to walk away. As she walked away from the grim scene, she felt a mystical tug to the south and whispered to the fog around her, "I wonder if father would be interested in a trip to Los Angeles?" She headed home, walking briskly through the fog, never once looking back at the haunting scene of justice served she had left behind.
