I know, I know. This is a Pre-Crisis site. But I'm also a fan of the Byrne/Carlin era Superman, and I've often wondered how much of Superman's published comics from before the Byrne revamp could possibly have survived into the new continuity.
Surprisingly, a lot more than you might think!
Fanzing, a fanzine site active around 20 years ago but long since defunct, had these articles every once in a while that would try to explain how Pre-1985/86 comic stories would have occurred in the unified Post-Crisis DCU. Often their theories were made defunct by comics that were published later on, but it was an interesting exercise nonetheless.
Before I joined the Five Earths Project 20 years ago (wow, that's a long time!), I used to spend a lot of time speculating about the Post-Crisis Superman's history. Obviously, any stories featuring characters reintroduced in the "present" such as the Toyman, the Prankster, Mr. Mxy, etc, were gone, as were all Bizarro stories, or stories about Krypton, the extended Superman Family, Clark Kent as a TV reporter at WGBS, etc. Really, most of the Silver Age stories were completely gutted by the Byrne era's revamps.
However, many of the Golden Age stories could still remain in continuity, and even some of Supergirl's stories could be salvaged as Power Girl stories (as we saw with a Supergirl team-up with the Doom Patrol vs. Reactron turn into a Power Girl team-up).
Since I have access to digital Superman comics, I dusted off my old project and started a couple of years ago to see which stories might still work in the Post-Crisis Superman's past. It's an interesting exercise.
As a side project, I also separated out all Superboy stories that might work under the continuity of the Pocket Universe, meaning there could be no stories featuring Lex Luthor as a villain or friend (since he doesn't arrive in Smallville until much later), and there could be no stories featuring aliens (since only Earth and Krypton had sentient populations in the Pocket Universe). As you might expect, this eliminates a LOT of Superboy stories. I think it was about half.
Anyway, I might share my list after I fine-tune my results. It's just for fun, not meant for anything Five Earths-related.
