Amanada Martin's Star Sapphire on Earth 2 doesn't have a well-defined history. Vandal Savage took a necklace that had 'half a gem' from Lucretia Borgia, just before he killed her...
"... a gleaming half of a fiery gemstone that hung about her neck." "The Duke of Ferrara [Vandal Savage] tore the jewel from her neck and pushed her over the railing to a sudden death below." "The jewel, whose true power the immortal never discovered, fell out of his possession sometime during those years and was almost lost to time — until today."
It was discovered in 1985 by the adventurer Rex Mason, and he split it in half and sent half to his employer, Candy Davis, and half to his niece, Amanda Martin. "Thus, when he found the pink stone, he had split it and sent half to Ms. Davis and half to Amanda for a surprise present."
So, it seems that the stone Amanda is using is actually a half of a half of the original stone, Candy (Darkstar) has another quarter, and the story of the other half has never been told...
And here is all we really know about the origin of the gem: "... the rest of the magical star sapphire. She had discovered its legend while studying other stellar objects from her grandpa’s notes. A powerful green-hued meteor had fallen to earth in China in ancient times, too. Maybe she could find it someday, as well."
This seems to imply that the original, whole, gem that has been split into Star Sapphires is a stellar object, perhaps a red-hued meteor.
Is there a more complete history of this gem in our archives?
I'd like to create a more complete history for it, maybe something like this: A meteor landed in Italy in the around 1474 AD, it was recovered by Leonardo da Vinci who studied it, and for some reason, split it into 2 pieces and gave one of them to the powerful Borgia family, maybe to pay for their protection. He wrote this story in his secret code in his journal. Candy Davis' grandpa managed to decode the entry from Leonardo's journal that talked about this meteor; he wrote the story of the gem (half gem) in his own journals, where Candy read the story and then hired Rex to recover it.
I wonder if maybe the other half of the original gem somehow passed from Leonardo's possession into the 7th Dimension, where it was eventually recovered by the original Star Sapphire, Queen of the 7th Dimension, who fought Green Lantern in the 40s?

I like your theory. It solves the mystery in a way very creative and appropriate for an Earth-2 story. I'm glad to see a solution to the puzzle of Amanda and the original Star Sapphire's gems
I wonder if the Amazons of the 7th Dimension are counterparts of the Zamaronians, or a totally different species who happened to come up with the idea of calling their Queen Star Sapphire? All the information we have indicates that the Oans did not exist in Earth-2, but maybe the Maltusians did, and died out before ever leaving their homeworld?

In current DC continuity, the original Star Sapphire was a Zamaronian banished to the 7th Dimension, but that was when all the Earths were collapsed and their history was bastardized. Certainly possible that Zamaron exised in our Earth 2. But I would personally prefer that the original Earth 2 Star Sapphire is NOT related to the Zamaronians, other than by coincidence of name.

I could use some ideas, I want to try to avoid cliches... what is the power source of the Star Sapphire? In my own Star Sapphire story, I noted that when the gem has been discharged, it takes a long time for it to recharge. But I don't know how long it takes to discharge or why resting recharges it. I could just say it takes 24 hours of continuous use to totally discharge it (or some relatively longer time of intermittent discharge) and one hour of rest per hour of operation to recharge.
Some possibilities are: absorbs some kind of ambient electromagnetic energy, absorbs magical energy (mana) from the environment, absorbs life energy from the host, absorbs life energy from the environment, absorbs mental energy, has a tiny leak to the 5th dimension and energy leaks through, absorbs kinetic energy (maybe even from ambient sounds)...
Thanks for your thoughts!

If the E-2 Star Sapphire fell to Earth in a meteor, then it might be magic, like Allen Scott's ring, which also fell to Earth in a meteor. Maybe it split off from the Starheart on it's way to Earth?
Alan Scott's ring and battery used to be one piece, until he carved the ring out of it. Maybe the gem can recharge itself overtime because it hasn't been re-carved.

Big Bang had a good idea for the origin of the Julia Gardner Beacon's power gem: it was the power supply for an alien starship. Maybe the Star Sapphire is a piece of ambergris from the species of Space Whale Energy Beast that swallowed Jo Nah in the Earth 1 universe, that was irradiated by a comet similar to the one that gave Tom Kallor his original super powers... though that doesn't explain what charges it with energy. Or it contains a few infinitesimally small particles of the cosmic egg - the matter that existed before the Big Bang. Or maybe it is a giant quantum particle. It seems sort of quantum in nature...
How about, a pearl from a 'space clam'?

I like the meteor from a magical dimension idea.

I have been reading the Jonni Thunder comics and various bios about her spread across the web and in several places the statue that gives Jonni her powers is referred to as coming from space, and there is reference to an Incan god. I wonder if the statue is made from a piece of the same meteor that delivered the star sapphire gems to Earth?
